|11:39 pm - On the topic of films.|
Wonder Woman was good. Quite good. While calling it "the best DC movie ever" is damning with faint praise, it was *actually good*. Like, "comparable to several Marvel movies" good. Not just "good for a comic book movie" and DEFINITELY not merely "the best DC movie ever", actually good, compared to other movies that are good, not just "good for X".
Wonder Woman appears to have finally figured out that if you make a movie *not suck*, it will get good reviews and attract audiences. However, it's DC and Warner Brothers: The odds of them doing that *again* for Justice League are extremely long, and that makes me sad.
In the mean time, Wonder Woman was really good. Go see it, encourage DC/WB to try to make more movies that aren't god-awful.
Crossposted from Dreamwidth. Original at http://theweaselking.dreamwidth.org/4802773.html, there are comments there.
The first DC film not directed by Zack Snyder turns out to be good. Co-incidence I think not.
Be fair - there were several Batman movies not directed by Snyder that were also varying degrees of god-awful, ranging from "meh, not nearly as good as Iron Man 2 but not QUITE as bad as The Amazing Spiderman 2" (Batman Begins) to "one good performance but a bad script and waaaaaay too long" (The Dark Knight) to "dear fucking god this movie is so goddamned racist is makes the previous two movies RETROACTIVELY WORSE by making it abundantly clear that their problematic racist elements weren't accidental. Also it's stupid." (Rise Of A Dark Knight Nation)
: Iron Man 2 being the low water mark, for the record, of what it takes to be even a passably good comic book movie. If you're not better than Iron Man 2, you suck.
Unfortunately, it was in part written by Zack Snyder and a couple other shitty hacks and could have seriously used the Carrie Fisher touch to make the lines not suck (OMG poor David Thewlis couldn't even save some of them). So there was some awful bullshit in there, and some horrible trite bullshit.
The first twenty minutes was AMAZING. I want a whole movie of JUST Themyscira plus bonus Lynda Carter references.
I facepalmed hard at "the new gas uses hydrogen? That means gas masks will be useless!" and "will it burn? It's got hydrogen, it will burn!".
Because, I mean, NO IT DOESN'T and NO THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT AT ALL, FUCKING WATER IS 2/3 HYDROGEN YOU IDIOT.
Especially because Our Steve already saw that the gas is intended to melt gas masks, and there are explosions all over the place why couldn't they have just seen that the gas was flammable?
But as stupid-ass stupid lines go, it's not NEARLY as bad as "microwaves only work on water in pipes, humans aren't mostly water, and steam isn't hot" - for one thing, it wasn't a major plot point.
And yeah, bad writing + melodrama happens from time to time, but still. THE GREATEST DC MOVIE EVER, easily better than Marvel's worst movies even if it's not as good as Marvel's best. It's a worthy movie, with a few bad moments that I could move past.
And at no point was there a plot point involving jars of Zeus' urine, so there's that.
They learned from the success of the Nolan Batman movies that everything should be dark and four. Let's see what lesson they learn from this success.
JLA is already filmed as well.
Funny you should mention Justice League, since they just started 2 months of reshoots under a new director who reportedly saw the script and said "what the FUCK?".
