Why yes, those ARE inky cat footprints. In a 15th century book.

Cats: Walking on all your shit, since forever.

I thought it was new cat footprints doing damage to an old book at first.

That's great. Do you know what the image source is? I'd love to know what the book is.

It's from here; the guy's a medieval book historian at Leiden University, posts a lot of pictures.

ETA: he says the image was sent to him by this guy.

ETA2: apparently it's from the State Archives of Dubrovnik.

There's this museum in Perigueux. They were going to build flats, but they were all 'Welp, there's Roman crap all over the place, shall we dig and see if there's any?' And they were like, 'Yeah, sure', so they did, and they found this whole huge house. Nobody knows whose house it was, and it probably has been expanded several times, but whole house, with much if it, including paintwork, graffiti, baths, intricacies of underfloor heating, that sort of thing, beautifully preserved. So, instead of building flats, they excavated the site and built a museum around it, so that you can walk around and look at stuff in situ as well as in cases all around. It's really cool. Anyways, there are a lot of tiles. And in some of those clay tiles, still on the floor of the house where Romans used to live, there are paw prints.

Because our feline friends KNOW they are gods, and believe that should be preserved forever.

It's either a cat, or it's Brown Jenkin perusing some dangerous tome.

I've got so many retweets from tweeting this. Mainly via one of the historians who follows me, unsurprisingly :-)

<3

(It saddens me that the only time they are mentioned in Fallout canon, it is to say that they seem to have all either run away or been eaten.)
