I have retinal damage. About 50% of my right eyeball doesn't work, and the fovea of my left eyeball is distorted so I can't focus properly.
This means it takes me twice as long to synthesize a visual field as someone with good eyes.
The cinematographic style of the LoTR movies -- and most current action or SF movies, for that matter -- is incredibly restless and changes rapidly, with lots of shaky camera work and very short scenes. I'm physically unable to see what's going on -- it's just a muddy blur.
LoTR has lots of lovely tracking shots across elf-infested New Zealand, but the combat tends to switch perspective a lot, so that's not going to work well for you.

I didn't realise you avoided video for a physical reason - I was just assuming it didn't do much for you.

This does not aid one's enjoyment of a movie ...
