The Royal Game Of Ur.

Simple, clever, replay value. I like I like a lot.

The amount of times that game gets the exact roll it needs is sick. I could almost guarantee that the move after I knocked one of its pieces off, one of mine would get knocked off.

The game has a strategy to help it out. Watch it play - it maximises the odds in it's favour whenever possible, so you can learn to play in a hurry by figuring out the logic it uses to make its moves.

It also helps to realise the odds of the various numbers coming up.

0: 1/16
1: 4/16
2: 6/16
3: 4/16
4: 1/16

So, you can bet on 2 coming up pretty reliably, and you'll do better if you can sit at 1, 3, or 4 squares away from his pieces, and if you can get 2 squares behind his pieces.

It's a fun little game. I beat it about 2/3 times, now that I know what I'm doing.

Yeah this seemed to be defying the odds though. I think I played 4 times and there was maybe 4 that a knockback from me didn't result in an immediate knockback from it. And I was doing things like hedging my bets on 1 space away rather than two. I was also getting the middle safe spot and sitting on it, which would piss me off if some person did it =)

The thing is, it stacks up units in the spots right before the big shared run - such that it's GUARANTEED to get either a knockout or a reroll, no matter what it rolls as long as it's not 0.

The AI prioritises like this:
1. Knock out opponent's piece (if possible). If more than one can be hit, bump the one farthest along.
2. Get a reroll (if possible)
3. Advance a vulnerable piece along the main track to safety
4. Fill the section before the main track, leaving spaces so that a 2 will be playable there whenever possible
5. Remove a piece in one of the two safe spots out the exit
6. Advance a piece from the pre-main track to the main track, avoiding 2 spaces from the other player whenever possible.

It's a really simple AI, and it's playing quite effectively despite that.
