A brief political comment.
In a race I wasn't watching[1], Joe Lieberman's campaign website went down and he complained that it was the victim of a DOS attack by horrid left-wing bloggers.

And the media reported it straight, as that - DOS attack.

The site is pingable.

The site is responding in 0.3 seconds to requests on port 80.

Other sites on the same machine are working just fine.

No, the problem is that Joe Lieberman DIDN'T PAY HIS BILL and his site is down because he hasn't paid the hosting company.

Does NOBODY check facts? It takes 15 seconds to confirm that Lieberman is LYING THROUGH HIS TEETH, AGAIN. Why did NOT ONE media outlet that thought this was a story worth covering do that check?

Take a look for yourself, at joe2006.com

Remember, you can't spell "Lieberman" without "Lie".

[1]: This was brought to my attention in a friendslocked post. I'm not even going to say by whom, unless that person feels like telling the world.

This is the american media. Since when did they do fact checking? Plus, it's not like many people even knows what a DOS attack is, or how to check for one.

It should be able to get a rise out of even American media if you tell them they've been lied to and supply the logs, yes?

Yes?

I'm being naive again, aren't I?

Minor fly in your ointment; other sites on the same server were also unavailable according to MSNBC. (Of course, it'd be nice if the report'd mentioned more than just the one.)

Still, it could be that Joe's campaign site just ran out of bandwidth.

Lieberman has a shitty hole-in-the-wall provider for his website. Regular traffic would likely be enough to take it down. This is the progression of events, near as I can tell:

* Lieberman neglects to pay his dues.
* Site is suspended.
* Lieberman bitches that he's been DDOS'd.
* Story hits all the major media outlets ("DAMN LIBURAL MEDIA").
* Everyone and their web-enabled grandmothers visit the site.
* Server gets overloaded (or 'farked' or 'wanged' in the vernacular).
* Lieberman cries, "SEE, DDOS. OMFG." as the site becomes inaccessible.

He ended up DDoS'd because he said he was being DDoS'd. What a total schmuck.

Kos covered it yesterday
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/8/8/153827/3493

Now, admittedly, Kos isn't exactly a Lieberman fan, but the analysis looks solid as do the facts. $15 per month isn't going to be enough to deal with a high traffic site, cheapskate providers are for the likes of me, not multi million $ campaigns.

That's pretty pathetic.
