Flip Benham was going to burn a Koran at Mississippi's state Capitol on July 18 but he couldn't get a fire permit. The blaze was to be the culmination of an antiabortion rally that Benham, director of Operation Save America, billed as an "ecclesiastical court." His attack on Islam might seem like a non sequitur, but to Benham, it made perfect sense. "Islam is the same thing as abortion and homosexuality," he said. "It's the black-colored glove covering the same fist, which is the fist of the devil." Benham had T-shirts made up, black with white lettering, proclaiming, "Homosexuality Is Sin! Islam Is a Lie! Abortion Is Murder! Some Issues Are Just Black and White!"

Yeah, well, fuck me in the ass but I believe in the First Amendment more than enough for some hate-stain shiteheel to burn a Koran or any holy book(s.)

Well, yes, but that fire might catch, so it's up to the discretion of the property owners to decide whether they want a fire on it.

Oh, totally. I guess I'm just not sure why this is being generated as news.

Because undermedicated crazy people attempting to take away your rights and arguing that anyone who isn't crazy like them should be killed are worth watching.

Did he argue that these people should be killed, or does he just find all of those things in immense distaste?

As far as I can tell he didn't use those sorts of fighting words.

Outside of that, how is this a First Amendment issue at all? Freedom of the press belongs to the owner of the press. By extension, if you want to burn something in effigy, you have to get permission from the property the pyre stands on.

He did say that the only options with Muslims was to kill them, be killed by them, or convert them.

But I was bringing in his previous speeches. Flip Benham isn't new.

I'm thinking forced sterilization would be a good option for Flip and his ilk. Those people shouldn't be allowed to breed and infect another generation with their crazy

I had to laugh at the irony of the "mother of four" advocating "self-control" as being the most effective form of birth control.

I feel fairly blase with regards to the safety of MY rights to an abortion.

I do hate the fact that the most recent tactic is essentially a blockade, but I also hate the fact that people seem completely willing to let legislators chip away a little more freedom just because the target (for now) happens to be Fuckhead Fred Phelps or Operation Rescue's shoulda-been-miscarried bastard children.

I can't say "leave flag-burning alone" but also say "no Koran-burning."

These people are NOT worth watching. If we were actually taking care of these issues the way they SHOULD be taken care of, the crazies would talk themselves out and accomplish nothing. So there's a couple hundred wingnut protestors that don't even have the courage of conviction to get arrested over it? Fuck them, and fuck people that keep pushing them into the spotlight.

Not just your right to an abortion. Your right to the freedom of speech and religion. Your right to NOT be a rabid fundie moron.

And I didn't say anything against him burning a Koran. I think he's got the right to burn any book he wants to. I also think that people who burn books, especially when accompanied by this kind of rhetoric and past record, are dangerous, violent mental defectives who are deeply in need of psychological treatment for their flamingly repressed homosexuality, years of in-depth critical thinking skills, and quite probably a good deal of antipsychotic medication.

The comment about my right to an abortion wasn't obviously a joke to you?

My right to freedom of speech and religion, yes, that's the concern. And also my larger point. Why pay attention to THESE assholes when the assholes who are IN CHARGE OF THE COUNTRY dismantle a new part of the Constitution every day?

What's more useful, the journalist in question covering this non-story where a loony can't even get it up enough to light some paper and face the consequences, or Alberto fucking Gonzales constantly saying "It's in the Constitution" and NEVER BEING QUESTIONED ON IT? Why is not every worthy newspaper/magazine/television show's editorial staff as outraged as we are about THAT, but they'll fall all over themselves to do such things as cover this story or "bravely" tell off Shirley Phelps?

Do you see what I mean now? Fuck Flip Benham. Statistically speaking, 100% of people now living know he is an insane asshole who nobody should take to heart. "No Porn" Al and the Shrub are at the threshold of turning the US into a police state where the Bush regime can castigate and gorge at will, and not nearly enough newspeople are even making a ripple over it. Maybe Olberman, but I dunno.
